Ben Shinke of Minneapolis won this year’s Dan Ulwelling bike race in Austin on Saturday. The race will be run next year on Saturday, June 30th. The race has seen a decline in numbers the last two years, and continued decline may impact it’s future. Terry Fox made a request at the awards presentation, that we get the word out to riders, who may be interested. They may promote it as a race/ride in the future, if that would bring more riders. This is the closest event of this type in our area, and it would be good to keep it healthy. At $12 in advance, $15 day of, it is also the best deal around. They serve fruit/Gatorade at the finish, give trophies to the winners, plaques and medals to top 3 finishers in age/gender groups, and everyone gets a t-shirt for entering. Crunch those numbers and the number of volunteers needed, and you see it is about the event, and the doing it. Join Larry Chladek and I next year. Larry creates a wonderful staging area in the parking lot every year, and we’ll both guide you through the rest.
