Congratulations to Al Farrow of Rochester for winning this year’s 2013 Owatonna Bike Club 25 mile Death Race! Al crossed the finish line in 1:04:22 for an average speed of 23 mph. 2 seconds behind Al was Owatonna’s own Dave Chabot. Dave hammered up the final hill but Al was able to hang on and then run Dave down just before the finish.
This year’s Death Race had a new start location in Havana and a new finish line at Dean Hartle’s 2nd driveway entrance (about 300 yards shorter than prior year finish lines). A new type of Finish Line was also created this year. The Death Race Trophy (a tombstone) sat by the edge of the road and was the “official” finish line. Somehow the tombstone words “The End Lies Here” seems rather fitting for a hill finish.
OBC gives a Big Thank You to Larry and Heidi Chladek for being the race starters and finish line recorders. Their volunteer work made the Death Race run without a hitch and served as a great warm up to this week’s Senior Games bicycle races.
A total of nine riders participated in this year’s Death Race. Congrats to these riders for a job well done!
